Nau mai, Haere mai, June - July 2009
Join us in the Whanganui Region to celebrate Puanga; the Whanganui Matariki Celebrations 2009.
As Māori New Year starts with the new moon of the first month of the cold season of, Pipiri (June). Puanga (Rigel) part of the Orion constellation is celebrated, as it features in the sky just prior to Matariki.
Traditionally Puanga starts the year with the fruiting of the miro tree which ensures that the kererū become large ready to be caught. Then conclude when the Piharau run is completed in August.
Today we welcome the Whanganui Community and the World to join with us to learn and experience aspects of Maori life. With a range of key events from the Dawn Puanga Blessing and Launch, Art Exhibition, Fashion Show, StarLab (astral navigation) and Traditional Kai Evening to name but a few.
