Programme Outline: Whanganui Museum is pleased to bring back the very popular astronomical stardome. The Starlab presentations are made by local Whanganui educators and so are tailored for PUANGA. School and Community open sessions are available by contacting Museum.

Official Blessing – Te Awa o Whanganui

Date: 1st June 2011
Time: 6am – 7.30am
Venue: Whanganui River, Putiki and Putiki Wharanui Marae
Programme Outline: 6am blessing at the Putiki Slipway, Kemp & Takarangi St, Whanganui River with Kaumatua, Dignitaries, Iwi and the Community. Following karakia will be kai (breakfast) and korero (presentations) at Putiki Marae. The ceremony will mark the significance of Puanga. As the new day dawns it is foreseen as an opportunity to join as one. Beginning with ancient chants preformed by our Whanganui pahake as a way to pay homage to nga Atua Maaori. Signalling our thanks to those that provide to our being through the lighting of symbolic offerings. Followed by viewing of Puanga and Matariki. Further more it will be a time to acknowledge those who have passed since this time last year. And to provide a fresh start for all. All of which will be followed by a sharing of food, history and new knowledge at the Putiki Marae

“Nga Whetu” in the Dome exhibition

Venue: Sarjeant Gallery, Queens Park
Programme Outline: The exhibition of “Nga Whetu” from little eyes. The Queenspark educators will be displaying the artworks of preschoolers from the community during the month of June.

Star Gazing – Puanga & Matariki in the Morning & the Night Sky

Session TWO
Date: Wednesday 29th June
Time: 7pm - 8.30pm
Venue: Ward Observatory, Cooks Gardens
Programme Outline: A night with the stars. Spend an evening hearing about and discussing the stars. This will also be accompanied by an evening – night view of the sky through the mobile telescope (weather permitting).

The presentation will discuss
  • constellation formations
  • information around navigation and harvesting of food (both traditional and modern)

Film Evening – Archival Footage and Digital Images of Whanganui Maaori mai ra ano

Date: 15 June 2011 (Date changed to 28th June 2011)
Time: 7pm – 8.30pm
Venue: Davis Lecture Theatre, Whanganui Regional Museum
Programme Outline:
  • Archived films of the Whanganui region to be shown with specialist narration from Whanganui persons skilled in this area.
  • Digital Images – some not seen before gathered from the Whanganui Museum digital imaging project.
  • Maaori Music accompaniment
  • Shared Soup and Cuppa

Whakapapa Research @ the Alexander Heritage Library “Whaia te Pae Tawhiti - Seek the Distant Horizon”

Venue: Alexander Heritage Library
Programme Outline: The Aotea Maori Land Court staff will deliver a presentation on searching your family history.

The presentation will include:
  • Researching your whakapapa at the Aotea Maori Land Court
  • Demonstration on searching Maori land online
  • How to use the resources in the Alexander Library

Traditional Kai Evening / PUANGA

Programme Outline: his hugely popular event returns to tantalise tastebuds with authentic Maaori kai. Aimed at introducing new tastes to the broader Whanganui and districts communities and celebrating the PUANGA theme of “kai”.
